Today was our field trip to the Canada Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Stanley was happy with how our class behaved at the museum! The following is a list of some of our highlights:
Today, tickets for our storytelling evening went home, please find them in your child's backpack, and email Mr. Stanley if you think you need more, less, or just have questions. In math, we worked on more geometry. Specifically, we worked on: rotating shapes, translating shapes, and reflecting shapes. These are all examples of transformations. In science, we continued researching different things in our solar system. Did you know that the Earth's orbiting speed around the sun is approximately 30 km/second.
Tomorrow we are going to the sports hall of fame. Be sure to pack a lunch, and the bus leaves promptly at 8:30 - so do not be late. Please remember to wear your ABP golf shirt to represent the school. If you have ordered hot lunch, a special lunch will be provided to you. Today we worked with Jeff Stockton again - he's been giving us great feedback, and March 15th is going to be most excellent. In gym, we finished our curling unit, which was amazing! In science, we continued working on solar system research. One student is very interested in the Tesla that's in space currently. Ms. Richards came to our class today and taught us some charcoal techniques for drawing a tree. In math, we worked on lines of symmetry by reflecting halves of shapes. This morning, we found out which project board groups we are in - ask me!
Today Jeff Stockton came back to the school and we heard the continuation of the story of Grendel and Beowulf. We also finished our storyboards, and Jeff was happy to see them. He's asked us to spend some time with them every day to create a mnemonic device by using our fingers to remember parts of the stories that we are telling. In gym, we started doing Olympic sports including ski jump, and biathlon.
For science, we continued working on blueprints for scaffolding, and circuit diagrams for c-train lines. In math, we continued working on a visual journal page about fractions. We also multiplied and divided fractions. In Daily 5, we read a myth about Pegasus, and the next story coming up is about Heracles. Mr. Vanderlinden is asking for dart-style Nerf guns to be donated to the gym for some Olympic events. They will be well taken care of, but they should be ones that you are willing to not get back in perfect condition, just in case. Today we had a indoor lunch and recess which was boring for some, and fun for others. We had a substitute teacher in gym and we played Dr. Dodgeball. In science, Mr. Baustad introduced us to pipes and clamps so that we can design a scaffold over the project board. You usually that type of scaffolding near large construction projects.
Most of us finished our storyboards of Greek Myths today - which is good, because Jeff Stockton is back tomorrow and Wednesday. A reminder for grade 6's: the form package for the conference is due tomorrow to Ms. Jacobi. Payment must be included in the envelope. Today skating was unfortunately cancelled due to bad weather and snow on the rink. A group of boys went this afternoon with Mr. Vanderlinden to help clear the rink, so we will be skating tomorrow morning. Please bring your equipment if you did not bring it today.
In math, we were going over the fractions booklet from last week. We also spent more time working on our essay - Wednesday is now the last day to work on them in class, and in Daily 5 we read a myth about Zeus turning into a white bull and carrying Europa to Crete. There is a white cow in this story, and we suspect that that may have been Io, which is unfortunate because the cow was sacrificed. Tomorrow is also another Repsol day. We are swimming tomorrow, so bring your swim gear. At the end of the day we went to the learning commons to do some speed stacking. It was amazing and marvelous! |
