Today we finished a slideshow that we are presenting in an assembly to the school tomorrow. The slideshow is about our solar system model, and it has a slide for every astronomical body. We played a basketball shooting game in gym, and we continued working on our writing portfolios.
Today, in science, we started to design models that would simulate the phases of the moon. We have a very small class, as many students were sick or still on vacation. In math, we reviewed the math tests that we had written before Spring Break. One thing that we've learned about test taking is that you need to read the whole question and answers very carefully before answering a question. In social studies, we continued to research the Iroquois Confederacy. One thing we've learned is that one of the nations in the confederacy was the "leading nation" - the Onondaga.
Welcome back!
Today was our first day back from Spring break and we are ALL so happy to see Mr. Stanley again! HOORAY! In math, we worked on place value, including place values up to the millions spot, and down to the thousandths spot. In social studies, we started to examine the Iroquois confederacy. We will compare and contrast it with Canadian Government, and Athenian Democracy. In science at the end of the day, we watched a video about the phases of the moon, which include new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third/last quarter (we're unsure about the naming), waning crescent, and then back to new moon. Today in math we had a math assessment with Ms. Jacobi. We will review it after Spring Break. In gym, Mr. Stanley taught us bounce passes, chest passes, and overhead passes in basketball. Today we made great progress on our solar system, and over half of the planets are now up. Some Grade 3's joined us today, and they were all student that Mr. Stanley taught last year. The painting group (along with the grade 3's that were visiting) continued to get lots done on our model of Calgary.
In gym today, we started working on basketball - which is great, because it's one of Mr. Vanderlinden's favourite sports. The painting committee has pretty much finished painting half of the project board, which is looking fantastic. In science, some of us are ready to start hanging up planets, and Mr. Stanley hung up Pluto (aka two blue stones glued together) today. In math, we talked about enlarging and reducing shapes, and we learned about the first quadrant of the Cartesian Plane. We also continued working on Mystic Roses.
Today in gym, we continued playing Sledge hockey - unfortunately, Canada lost 2-1 in the Paralympic final to the USA in overtime. In science, we continued working on models and Aurasma overlays for our solar system. The model will be complete and up by Thursday evening, in time for Student Led Conferences. In math, we made mystic roses. To make a mystic rose, you need to know:
- Division - How to measure degrees with a protractor - Draw straight lines with a ruler - Draw a circle with a compass The book fair is happening this week! We checked it out this afternoon and made wishlists. If your child wants to buy something, please check the list they made. It will also be open during Student Led conferences on Thursday and Friday. Today in science, some of us have finished papier mache for our planets, and we have started to paint them. For gym, we did Indy 500 with Mr. Fong's class. For Daily 5, we read the myth of Meleager and Atalanta and their boar hunt, and some of us wrote notes to Jeff Stockton! We also met up in our project board committee groups to talk about future plans for the project board. Have a nice weekend!
Today was our last time working with Jeff Stockton for storytelling. We spent a lot of great time with him. He taught us a lot about public speaking, which is a really important life skill. We are feeling lachrymose about our time with him ending. We enjoyed storytelling, and it was something different for the last three months. He told us a lot of great stories such as The Boo Hag, Perseus, and Beowulf and Grendel. The day was a little bit crazy with a lot of running around getting ready. At the end of the day, we started using Plickers, which is something we will use in math. You can Google Plickers, or watch videos of classes using them on Youtube.
Reminders for tonight: Don't be late! Doors open at 6:00, and the performance in the gym will begin at 6:30. Wear your formal golf shirt. Wear other lucky clothes so that you feel comfortable, or bring a lucky charm if you want to. Today we started to make papier mache models of planets in our Solar System. Some groups have been using Tinkercad to design objects that they will 3D print. This afternoon, we met with our storytelling groups to continue practicing. Reminder that our storytelling night is Thursday night. In gym, we started playing sledge hockey, because the Paralympics are currently on.
Just a reminder that we have Repsol tomorrow, and we are in the pool, so please bring your swimgear. Today in gym, we joined Mr. Fong's class to play a game of Benchball. It went well. In our assembly today, they announced the winners of the Yearbook cover contest. There were 7 finalists, including a student from our class, and a grade 5 student from Mr. Fong's class was the winner. There were also 2 students who told their whole story in front of the entire school - including one from our class! Today was our first day to meet with our Project Board groups. Some of the groups spent some time filling out work applications for projects they want to complete on the model of Calgary. In science, we continued research on parts of the solar system - next week we will finish our research and begin designing and creating object for our solar system model.
A reminder that if you have the wrong number of tickets, or if you need more tickets for the story night next week, please email Mr. Stanley. We have limited space still available. Tomorrow from 1:00-3:00 the school is hosting a community skate, down at the community rink. There will be hot chocolate available, and several students from our class have volunteered to help out. If you are interested in coming, please bring your skates, hockey stick if you have one and want to play, gloves, and a helmet. If there are enough interested people, we will be playing a game of shinny. The other rink will be available for free skating. Mr. Stanley will be there to play, and Ms. Jacobi says she will be there snowshoeing. |
